WE CAME ACROSS RAUL'S WORK ON INSTAGRAM AND HAD TO REACH OUT. HIS BEAUTIFUL MIXED MEDIA COLLAGES WOULD GRACE ANY WALL. WE GET AN INSIGHT INTO THE CREATIVE PROCESS OF THE BARCELONA BASED ARTIST. 

Hey Raul tell us a little about your background?   

I am Raul Huerta aka Ral-art- works, I am a collage artist who has always lived and worked in the surroundings of Barcelona. I studied graphic design, where I discovered collage technique as a medium to communicate. My current work is based on the portrait to represent the hidden beauty in feelings and emotions through spots of colour.   

Tell us about the Barcelona art scene.   

Right now in Barcelona everything is up in the air, but what I see and I'm most interested in is the boom of street art and muralism, which is being exported worldwide.   

How would you describe your art? 

My art is a mix. A mixture of many things, of many different techniques, of many materials and of different styles and colours, to be able to create something genuine that is what I am trying to differentiate myself from other artists.   

Why choose this medium? 

It is a medium that I discovered studying design and it has haunted me until now. It gave me the freedom to do anything, based on old designers before the digital age, and especially Dadaism, which used what was around to create designs for their posters. 

What in your opinion is integral for an artist?

Basically it is being honest with yourself, when you’re creating. Be very constant, be restless in the research for new techniques or improve the ones you already use. And never give up   

Has your way of working and it's process changed over time? 

We are always in constant evolution, so my process has been varying very subtly, trying to improve day after day   

What do you get most enjoyment from in life? 

Above all, create and paint. But when I am not working, I love discovering places, exhibitions, traveling and being surrounded by family and friends, enjoying a quiet life.   

How do you market your work? are social networks a great platform for you or just an added bonus? 

Especially in social networks. These gave me the opportunity to introduce myself to the world and since that day I have been very grateful. Social networks can give you that visibility and even attract customers without the need for a web page.   

Who is your favourite artist past or present and why? 

From the past I have many reference artists that I respect very much, such as Van Gogh, Frida, Basquiat... that's why I couldn't say one. But if I have to say the one that impressed me the most, that's Dali. Go to his museum in Figueres and see everything he has done, it is magnificent.   What does the future hold for Raúl?   I hope a lot, I think I have a lot to contribute and I work every day to do better, evolve and not stop doing things. I have a project with big sized artworks, that I hope I can show this year.
